Eating disorders are often a secret, hidden illnesses. First symptoms appear in the form of a diet that gets out of control, or occasional overeating and regurgitations. In the beginning, a person can receive compliments from her surroundings for losing weight, or she can feel good for finally “gaining control over her food“.

The trap of eating disorders lies in the fact that emotional problems are being solved through establishing a relationship towards food. The feeling of abandonment, the need for love, suppressed anger or guilt can sometimes be too much for a young person. Being thin becomes the most important, central thing in life, and everything else fades away.

We start to look at our own body as the enemy, food becomes the most dangerous thing in the world, and eating or not eating becomes a question of survival. Never being thin enough, you start losing contact with your friends and family who don't understand your obsession with food. The worst thing you can do is to continue living as if nothing is wrong. The deeper you sink into anorexia, bulimia or an unspecified eating disorder, the harder it will be to escape that enchanted circle.

You CAN be healthy. You can love your body, and enjoy each day once again. Seek help, talk about your difficulties.
