Within the Youth Initiative, members and volunteers of NET+ recorded a song and a music video named „Lijepa sam“ – a rendition of “I'm beautiful“ by Christina Aguilera (words and music by Linda Perry). Talented young singer Petra Antolić and her band recorded the song with a help of studio Elemental and Srđan Sekulović Skansi, while enthusiastic group of Dramatic Arts Academy students with technical support of Komakino, created a video. With the lyrics and the video we intended to show understanding we have for adolescents difficulties to accept themselves. Most of the people during growing up encounter with periods of time when they don't like themselves or their bodies. Sometimes we perceive our body as an enemy and as an obsticle on a way towards happiness. Girls and boys who went too far in a war against their bodies got an eating disorder. They are not spoiled or vain, but have a problem that they cannot resolve by themselves.
Our body is with us during the whole lifetime. It is given to us with our birth and we have to cherish it, love it and accept it with all the flawes or unperfections. Ideals of beauty ar changing, fashion industry makes money on our self-doubts, but we have just one life and one youth during wich we should enjoy out natural beauty and health.
| Let your body be your friend. |

INTERESTING RESEARCH
Did you know there was a research on acceptance of ones appearance where young girls were divided into two groups and sent into a waiting room – one group had fashion magazines to look at during their wait, the other daily newspapers. After that the girls were interviewed. The results: 80% of the girls who were given fashion magazines expressed frustration and discontent with the way they look, and have shown fear of gaining weight. The “harmful“ influence of fashion magazines was best shown on girls with generally low self-esteem and the ones prone to criticise the way they look.

Did you know that the influence of the media on eating disorders has been proven? Anne Becker, a researcher, spent several years on the Fiji islands, before television was introduced there, and got to know the islands ancient culture which goes back thousands of years. Prior to 1995 being thin was considered an illness there, and there were no eating disorders. After TV was introduced, the values placed by the ancient culture were overpowered by the western culture: the girls started going on diets, and in 3 years of watching television, the percentage of adolescents who force regurgitation grew to a high 11%. The girls explained they wanted to be thin in order to improve their status in society.

“If you love someone, help them carry their weight“ is a campaign organised by the Italian Office for Equality in order to raise public awareness. The concept of the campaign was to avoid shocking images so the parents, teachers and friends would be able to recognize the first symptoms of eating disorders among the ones around them. The campaign was introduced to the public through papers, television and radio commercials, advertising in movie theatres and on buildings, in order to make the problem noticeable and help prevention.
